20 works by 19 individual artists and 1 artistic collective are exhibited in the 27 Concurso de Arte Eduardo León Jimenes [27th Eduardo León Jimenes Art Contest].

The works in the competition include various techniques, from painting, sculpture, and drawing, to performance, installation and video art. The works address diverse topics ranging from a review of the history of Dominican art and its relationship/tension with universal art; the discussion about the policies of the art institution; the notions of body, gender, and representation, as well as the concern about violence against women and references to the notions of race, citizenship, and hospitality.

In this 27th edition of the Contest, 241 individual artists and 10 collective artists presented their proposed projects or finished pieces, through a completely digital registration process, which concluded in February of 2018.

This 27th edition of the Concurso de Arte Eduardo León Jimenes coincides with the 15 anniversary of Centro Leon, whose origins are linked from 1964 to the first edition of this event created by the León Asensio brothers, in order to achieve a projection of Dominican artistic and cultural richness and promote the development of the country through cultural education.

About the Art Contest

In 1964, E. León Jimenes summoned the first Concurso de Arte Eduardo León Jimenes. In five decades, 27 editions have been held, and 196 artists have been awarded. Their works, 186 in total, are now part of the Eduardo León Jimenes Visual Arts Collection.

From its origins, the Contest’s fundamental goal is to promote the creativity and cultural values of the Dominican nation and its creators. The formative process behind this contest, not only allows space for interlocution for artists but also extends the range of action to emerging creators.
